SD Rooted Real Estate is a second generation business [originally Berens Real Estate] established in 1977 by Vince Berens. Greg and Sandy (Berens) Smith took over the business after 45 years of being a staple in the Gregory County real estate landscape.
Originally from Gregory, SD, Greg and Sandy both served 20 years in the US Air Force. In 2015, they moved back to Gregory to be closer to family and get back to their ‘roots.’
A little about us…
Together, the Berens-Smith roots in Gregory date back as early as 1906. Greg and Sandy were born and raised in Gregory. They attended South Dakota State University. There they went through ROTC and were commissioned into the Air Force post graduation as 2nd Lieutenants in 1983. While in the Air Force, Greg and Sandy lived in New Hampshire, Wyoming, Guam, Nebraska, Colorado (twice) and Montana. After completing 20 years in the military, they settled down in the Colorado Springs area. After they became empty nesters, they sold their acreage and home in Colorado and in 2016 moved back to Gregory to be closer to both sets of their parents and get back to their SD “Roots.”
Vince + Doris Berens (Sandy’s parents) were getting closer to retirement, so Greg and Sandy decided to complete their Associate Brokers license in 2019. While working with Vince to gain experience, Greg continued his real estate education and completed his Broker’s course in June 2022. Berens Real Estate officially changed ownership and name in November 2022 to SD Rooted Real Estate.
